Cotton vs Polyester Satin vs 100% Mulberry Silk – What's Best for Your Hair?

When it comes to hair care, the fabric you sleep on or wrap your hair in makes a huge difference to your hair’s health. Let’s break down the differences between three common materials used in hair accessories: cotton, polyester satin, and 100% mulberry silk.

Cotton is a natural fibre, breathable and easy to find—but it’s not the best choice for your hair. It’s highly absorbent, which means it pulls moisture away from your hair and skin. This often leads to dryness, breakage and frizz, especially for curly or textured hair. While it’s great for clothes or towels, cotton isn't ideal for Sleep Caps or Pillowcases if you're trying to protect your curls.

Polyester satin might look smooth and shiny, but it’s a synthetic fibre. While it feels soft at first, it doesn’t offer the same breathability or moisture-preserving benefits as silk. It can also create static and cause friction against your hair overnight, which may lead to frizz or damage over time. Unlike silk, it doesn't naturally regulate temperature, so it can feel hot and sticky—especially if you're a warm sleeper.

100% mulberry silk is in a class of its own. It’s naturally smooth, breathable, temperature regulating, and incredibly gentle on hair. It helps reduce friction, frizz, and breakage, keeps curls defined for longer, and preserves moisture where it belongs—in your hair. All of our silk products—like the Cloud Bonnet, Silk Sleep Caps, Silk Lined Tubular Hair Wrap, and Pillowcases—are made from 19 or 22 momme 6A grade mulberry silk that’s also OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, so you can trust that it’s safe, non-toxic, and premium quality.

So, What Is Satin Anyway?

Here’s where it gets a bit confusing: “satin” isn’t a fibre—it’s a type of weave or finish. That means you can have satin made from polyester, nylon, or even silk. The satin weave gives fabric a shiny, smooth surface, which is why satin feels nice to the touch. But the quality of the fibre makes all the difference.

For example, polyester satin is often shiny but doesn’t offer the same hair or skin benefits as silk satin. On the other hand, silk satin combines that sleek satin finish with the natural benefits of real silk—it’s breathable, cooling, hypoallergenic, and long-lasting.

Why Silk Quality Really Matters

Not all silk is created equal. Our products use high-grade 6A mulberry silk, which is the best you can get. It has longer, stronger silk fibres that make the fabric more durable, less prone to tearing, and softer on your hair. The momme weight (a measure of silk thickness) also matters—ours is 19 or 22 momme, which gives your Silk Sleep Caps, Silk Lined Tubular Hair Wrap, and Pillowcases the perfect balance of softness, structure, and longevity.

Better silk = better performance – It reduces frizz, protects curl definition, and is gentler on delicate strands.
High quality silk lasts longer – Inferior silk can feel coarse, lose its sheen, or break down more quickly with use and washing. With proper care, high quality silk holds its shape and benefits over time—making it a smart investment in your hair care routine.
Feels more luxurious and performs beautifully – You’ll see and feel the difference.
